Cross began in Cork City in the mid-19th century as a family-run carriage hire and stables business. By the 1920s, that same drive pushed Cross into early domestic refrigeration, selling ice boxes and mechanical cooling systems. In the 1930s, Cross delivered its first commercial coldroom to the Royal Oyster Tavern, marking a clear shift into specialist refrigeration.

As demand grew, Cross retrained its motor mechanics in refrigeration engineering, building deep technical skill from the ground up. In 1966, Cross became the Frigidaire distributor for Ireland, leading to a formal separation from the original garage business. By 1968, the company focused fully on commercial refrigeration, shaping the business Cross is known for today.
